An event co-organised in partnership with Dansk Industri
Powering European Industry with decarbonised energy
A diverse energy mix to support industrial decarbonisation and electrification
Background
With Europe’s electrification rate currently at only 22-23 percent, there is an urgent need to make electricity the primary energy carrier to enhance the EU’s competitiveness, reduce dependency on energy imports and support the bloc’s decarbonization efforts. Following the Clean Industrial Deal, the European Commission is planning to publish its electrification action plan in the coming months.
Nuclear energy plays a crucial role in the electrification of Europe by providing stable and reliable power, thereby complementing fluctuating renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Denmark, a pioneer in renewable energy production, has previously been hesitant towards developing nuclear energy, with laws prohibiting the national energy planners considering it for the energy planning. Geopolitical developments as well as technological have resulted in a change in public perception and commercial interest, to a more positive interest, where the majority of Danes (57,8%) today are pro-investigating the opportunities with nuclear production.
Conference objectives
Held under the Danish Presidency of the EU, this event will look at how a diverse mix of low-carbon energy sources can support EU industrial competitiveness. It will discuss the key challenges and obstacles to electrification and the decarbonisation of industrial sectors and how nuclear energy can contribute to overcome these. We encourage active participation from all stakeholders involved in the energy sector, and seek to foster dialogue amongst policymakers, industry developers, investors, end users, and representatives from regions, communities, and municipalities.
