Adrian Hiel
Director, Electrification Alliance
Adrian Hiel is an energy strategist focused on influencing EU energy policy toward faster, cheaper, and more effective climate action grounded in physical and economic reality. He is the creator of the Hydrogen Ladder, greatly improved and made famous by Michael Liebreich. It is a sector-by-sector hierarchy that clarifies where hydrogen genuinely adds value and where it does not, helping policymakers avoid costly misallocation and greenwashing. Complementing this is his more recent publication, the Electrification Staircase created with Michael Liebreich, Dr. Silvia Madeddu, Thomas Butler and William Drake, which maps the sectors that are easiest to electrify now and into the future.
Together, these frameworks have become touchstones across the energy transition, cited by governments, utilities, and investors seeking evidence-based choices and clarity into a complicated energy landscape.
As Director of the Electrification Alliance, Adrian brings together the entire European supply chain of electricity. From the technologies that generate our clean, European energy to the organisations that transport it, use it in the smartest way and the people and technologies who make the most efficient use of the energy possible.
